The People of Gibraltar
1910 - Edward Mellor - Camera Never Far from his Reach

Glass slides of the seven photographs shown below are held by the archives of the Lancashire County Council. They date from 1910 to 1919 and all of them are attributed to Edward W. Mellor apart from the last one.

Edward was born in Bury in 1852. His father Jonathan was a manufacturer and Edward followed him into the family's cotton-spinning business. He also became a leading member and eventually President of the Manchester Geographical Society.

More importantly Mellor also seems to have been keen on travelling to exotic places with his camera never too far from his reach. The Gibraltar photos were probably taken while he was on his way to or back home from places such as Italy, Egypt, Ceylon and India - hence the photos of the P and O liners on which he may have travelled at one time or the other. Back home he often used these photographs to hold popular slideshows and he later became a member of the Royal Photographic Society.
