The People of Gibraltar
1919 - Major John M. Rose - Served in Gallipoli

Captain - later Major - John M. Rose was an officer of the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force. During World War I he served in Gallipoli as a commander of the Machine Gun section and was seriously injured. He later also saw action in France.

Obviously a keen photographer he took numerous snapshots of the places he visited and produced an album containing well over two hundred photos - including several of the Rock of Gibraltar. The Album is dated 1914 - 1919 but the individual photos are undated. My guess is that the Gibraltar ones were taken in 1919 when on his way back home.

All the Gibraltar views are restricted to the more southern areas which suggest that he took from his troopship and that he never actually set foot inside the town itself. Although the photos are not particularly original their relatively high definition allows the viewer an insight into the relative positions of some of the more important buildings in this area of the Rock.
